Research evidence and further reading
Essential reading for any health practitioners, emergency services personnel, or anyone who is likely to need to intervene in an emergency: The Worst is Over by Judith Acosta and Judith Simon Prager.
It describes how what we say to someone in distress can make an enormous difference to the outcome of the emergency and can even be life-saving.
The Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BC Division) has compiled a list of excellent references on the general use of clinical hypnosis and hypnosis in dentistry.
For clinicians: a brief search of Google Scholar, Pub Med, or the Cochrane Library will reveal hundreds (or thousands, if a less narrow search is conducted) of scholarly articles on the efficacy of clinical hypnosis.
For the general public, a humerous and very well-written book of general interest on hypnosis is Monsters and Magical Sticks, There’s No Such Thing as Hypnosis written by Heller and Steele.
